I wanted to reach out to you with an invitation to be a part of the Straits Area Ministers Association and invite you to our ministers meetings which are held on the third Monday each month rotating to each of our churches .
Each month we gather for mutual support, build unity, fellowship, prayer and to seek avenues and opportunities, where we, as fellow believers in our Lord Jesus can present the Lord Jesus Christ to the communities in which our congregations are found.
Our goals are nonpolitical, but only with the aim of exulting our Lord Jesus so that others might come to believe and experience God’s grace, mercy, forgiveness, and salvation and everything that our great God, the Holy Trinity, offers any who will but freely receives it thru faith in Christ.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please call me at
231-238-8161 or email me at pastortcc2022@gmail.com

A White Stone

"I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it." Revelation: 2:17c

Jesus, speaking through St. John, to his people in the early church at Pergamum which was a community along the imperial mail rout in Asia-Minor, gives them, and to Christians in all ages, a word of encouragement after speaking correction to them.

Our Lord tells them that they will receive a "white stone", with their new name upon it. Why would being the recipients of such a gift be an encouragement to them and us?

These early Christians would have understood what Jesus was telling them and been grateful for it.

  Acquittal

In the court systems of that day, after trying one accused of a crime, and after all the evidence was presented and brought forward and testimonies given, a panel of judges would deliberate then render their vertices publicly.

The accused person would stand before all and the judges who then would show their decisions by dropping a stone into a conduit that would drop down into a slot that was visible to all in the court.

A black stone for guilty, and a white stone for innocent, if there was two black and one white the person was condemned and sentenced. If two white then the accused was publicly declared innocent, justified, not guilty and set free. Once declared innocent, justified, a person could never be tried again.

Christians Innocent

Jesus is telling them, and us, that they are acquitted of sin and will not be condemned. Jesus is declaring us before all, that we are free, all through his grace, in spite of the mountain of evidence against us all, he the great Judge finds us not guilty, and once he declares us so, we can never be tried again, set free.

This would have been a comfort and encouragement to know that the Lord has acquitted them and us.

St. Paul wrote of this acquittal, this justification, that we can experience this in Jesus:

"(He) forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross" Colossians:2:13-14

Once having been acquitted we can no longer be tried ever again, even though it is quite obvious that we all are guilty, yet:

"Having been declared righteous, then, by faith, we have peace toward God through our Lord Jesus Christ" Romans 5:1 (Young's Literal Translation)

"Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him." Romans: 4:8

We are now set free, all by his grace, and the work of salvation that Jesus secured for us. We can never be condemned or accused again; the Great Judge has rendered his verdict.... NOT GUILTY!

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of GodEphesians:2:8

An Invitation

Another purpose for a white stone in the ancient world, was, that white stones were used to invite persons to important events, often these white stone invitations would have been sent by a special messenger with   the recipient's name written or inscribed upon the.

Those invited would need to bring these invitations along to be admitted to the gathering. White Stones were used to extend an offer to be a part of a wedding feast.

It was considered a great honor to have received such an invitation and be found in possession of one. The only thing that could keep one out was by absolute refusal to receive it, even though a person's name was already inscribed upon it or to cast it  away. In that culture it was considered a great social insult to turn down a personalized an invitation.

Gospel Invitation

The Gospel in just such an invitation, through the proclamation of the message about Jesus Christ we are all personally invited to the wedding super. We are offered free access to the greatest, most prestigious event in time and eternity. God has sent this personalized invitation to us through His Son Jesus Christ. It should be great honor to be received.

"but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things" Hebrews:1:2a-b

Jesus used the wedding supper in his teaching, that an invitation is offered and He commissioned messengers to invite the guest. Unfortunately that there will be some, who having received this special invitation offered out of love will , will refuse to attend even though it is already theirs’s

"Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come.Matthew: 22:8

They did not esteem the invitation as they should have, nor did they care that it was extended to them. But some did and will receive it.

"Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find. So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. " Matthew: 22:9-10

Through the message about Jesus our great God offers this personalized invitation to any and to all; that they, having been declared not guilty, are now invited to come into an eternal relationship with Him for all eternity nothing can keep us out but our own unwillingness to receive it. This would have been great encouragement to those Christian in Pergamum and to us today, there is nothing to keep us out.

Benediction: May we each and all live out that innocents which we all have been declared to be as we walk to the great wedding supper of our Lord, today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen

The Children Are Free

" And when Peter was come into the house, Jesus stopped him, saying, What Do you think , Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? Peter said to him, Of strangers. Jesus said to him, Then the children are free."Matthe:17:25-26

The Parables of our Lord Jesus Christ are generally regarded as having three classifications, Kingdom Parables, Grace Parables and Judgment Parables. Of the Grace Parables, the first we encounter is in the seventeenth chapter of the Gospel of St. Matthew.

This is an "acted out" parable, more than Jesus using words to articulate a point. The Holy Spirit inspired St. Matthew to place this account in the same chapter as the Transfiguration, Healing and Jesus giving the Second prediction of His death. It occurs in the fishing community of Capernaum in the Province Galilee.

There are some Biblical Scholars who question the timing of the events as to when this occurrence takes place within Jesus' ministry. There are some who believe that this takes place at the onset of the ministry of our Lord, but is placed here in the narrative to emphasis the work of the Cross that Jesus gives a prediction of within the same chapter.

This may be, in the same way that St. John places the clearing of the money changers out of the Temple early in his account to reflect Jesus' mission of restoring a right relationship between God and humanity and Jesus' intention of doing away with the overly religious  system" which became bloated with greed and self-righteousness  in the hands of the Religious Leaders, but  the other Gospels accounts  place it after the events of Palm Sunday  just before the Crucifixion.

Temple Tax

After Jesus and his Disciples arrive at  Capernaum, St. Peter is asked by some of the Jews if Jesus pays the Dracham Temple Tax. This tax which was two Dracham, and was intended to be used for the upkeep of the Temple and the livelihood of the Priest who ministered there was, it amounted to two days wages.

"And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tax money came to Peter, and said, Does not your master the tax? He said, Yes" Matthew:17:24-25a

St.Peters' answer ,if translated literally would simply be "yes" or maybe better translated "of course".

After St. Peters' conversation with the Tax Collectors , St. Peter  is then asked by Jesus ,his thoughts  regarding who Kings bring taxation upon

"And when Peter was come into the house, Jesus stopped him, saying, What do you  think , Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers?" Matthew:17:25b

St.Peter answers    "Peter said to Jesus, "Of strangers." (26a)

Jesus answer “ Jesus said to Peter, Then  the  children are free."(26b)

But after this Jesus instructs St. Peter to pay the tax on their behalf,  buy catching a fish and fin ding the need amount within its mouth.

"Jesus said to him. “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.” (27)

 Not a Taxing Question

There are some who see this as Jesus’ endorsement a civil government right to taxation on its citizen, while there might be a broad application to that, but that is not the real point. Most know the words of Jesus when asked about taxation in a conversation with the religious leaders. After asking to be shown a coin Jesus declared.

"And Jesus answering said to them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's" .Mark:12:17

Taxation is not the point.

In that day the Drachma ,that is the coinage used to pay the Temple tax,  came to be used anonymously for the religious  system that it maintained, when people used the term Drachma, what  they meant,  is as the whole system, it spoke of involvement and participation in short it represented "religion".

Free of Religion

Looking back at Jesus' and St.Peters' conversation,  using the question as to who kings tax,  strangers or their children? , St.Peter answers correctly  that strangers are taxed, and then Jesus declarers the "Children are free".

Recall that the question which began the acted out parable was regarding the Drachma, which maintained the "system of religion"  , Jesus only tells St.Peter to pay the tax to avoid "offense" not to fulfill an obligation.

What is Jesus telling us the children are free from? Jesus is saying the children are free of the tax, the tax in question is the Drachma tax which maintain the "system of religion" , the Drachma being representative of  "religion" itself. This is what Jesus is declaring that the children are free from. The Children are free from drachma; meaning Free from performance-based religion.

Children Are Free

The Greek word that the Holy Spirit inspired St. Matthew to use here for Children is "Huion", it is the same word used to describe Jesus as being the Son or child of God. Here the word "Huion” is found to be in its plural form, by using its plural Jesus is bring forward the idea of being in association with himself, Jesus who is truly God's uniquely born Son.

This speaks to us that when we come to believe in Jesus, that is, we enter the sonship that Jesus alone truly possesses, and when we do, we are then free Children. We are now under grace. The Children are free. Using Children, "Huion", we are being told that we now to have a relationship with the Father of our Lord Jesus.

Jesus, we are told in the Gospel of St. John,  had come to give us the power or right to become sons or Children of God.

"Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God." John:1:12-13

Religion

The Old Covenant given by God and enjoined with Israel was intended to direct Israel, and any, to their need for the Savior. However, it became in the hands of the religious establishment a burden to the people.

The religious leaders had added additions to the "Law”, and yet, found ways around it for their own profit or convenience. They made it a hard yoke of performance, which most "religions" are. This is what the Drachma came to symbolize, this the "Tax” the Children are free from.

None can live up the perfect standard perfectly but for Jesus alone. Jesus alone is with out sin. Hebrews:4:15

Freedom

The Apostle St. Paul, himself, some years latter advances this idea of being Children and the freedom which we are called to. St. Paul writings to the Christians at Galatia in Asia Minor, a part of modern-day Turkey. St. Paul address this freedom due to certain teachers who had come attempting to graft into Christianity portions of the Old Covenant, that is, they were merging works and performance with grace.

St. Paul writes to them and we today about freedom of sonship and being heirs with our Lord by grace. Some, were wanting to enter into this type of religion, the very thing that Jesus came to set us free from, however some were turning to, “religion” and trusting in their performance, not in Christ alone by grace. They would no longer be free. They would be paying the Drachma so-to-speak.

"Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differs nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Why you are no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ". Galatians:4:1-7

Again, the Apostle St. Paul stresses this freedom that the Children of God are admitted into freely by Jesus.

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty with which Christ has made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.Behold, I Paul say to you, that if you be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect to you, whoever of you are justified by the law; you are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision avails anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which works by love" . Galatians:4:1-5

This is the Drachma that all can be free from, to walk in the sonship that is ours' through our Lord Jesus Christ alone.... freedom, that is being truly free, when we come to believe in Jesus then the Children are Free....

Benediction: May we each and all live in the true freedom of the Sonship which we share with our Lord Jesus, today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen

A Blameless Priesthood

"At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” Matt: 12:1-2

Jesus, and his Disciples were walking in the gain fields on the “Sabbath” day, it is here, that Jesus has a confrontation with the religious leaders over their perception that Jesus' disciples were "violating" the "Sabbath" command. This exchange in the grain fields between Jesus and the Pharisees was one of the many ongoing exchanges that occurred throughout Jesus' ministry for 3 1/2 years

The Pharisees are upset that the disciples of Jesus were “working” on the "Sabbath” day, they considered the Disciples picking grain and eating it as the "work of harvesting" which the Pharisees deemed this as "unlawful".

"At that time Jesus went through the grain fields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.” Matt:12:1-2

The Pharisees had held the Sabbath as a test commandment of obedience and faithfulness to the Covenant established by God with the people of Israel at Mount Sinai.

The Pharisees read the command in the Book of Exodus written by the Great Prophet of the Lord God Moses, stating that the Sabbath(s) was a sign between God and Israel, that the Lord was their God and Israel was his people.

"The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'You shall surely observe My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the LORD who sanctifies you. Therefore, you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people" Ex:12-14

Over the years the religious leaders had built a hedge of their own ideas around the Sabbath in order to "protect" the Sabbath's sanctity so that it would not be "profaned" , and that any who did not embrace their view was , in their minds, disobeying God.

The keeping of the Sabbath was their hallmark of obedience, and it was their own imposed “litmus test” upon others as how they measured obedience to the Covenant.

But Jesus and his disciples were, in the minds of the Pharisees, violating this “test” , and the Pharisees reacted badly, and accused Jesus and the Disciples of braking the Sabbath. The Sabbath was in the Pharisees' view the focus of the Covenant that God made with Israel.

Changing Covenants

For us to truly understand this encounter in the grain fields we need to go back to the calling of the Disciples. That is, Jesus called his Disciples and sent them forth into the work of preaching that the Kingdom of God, that God's Kingdom had arrived and that a relationship was opened for humanity to have with God. We can read about this in Matthew10:1-20

In Matthew 11:12 Jesus issues his great invitation for any and all who will freely receive it to "Come to me and I will give you rest" . Jesus tells us, that in him is the true rest of which the Old Covenant Sabbath was only a shadow of, Jesus is the realty of that rest.

" Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day thing which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ" Col: 2:16-17

The very point that the Pharisees confront Jesus on, the “Sabbath” is what the Pharisees looked to as their evidence of piety as the very means by which they measured righteousness. That means, these Pharisees “rested" in the Sabbath, looked to the Sabbath, trusted and relied on the Sabbath, drew their identity from the Sabbath and saw it's keeping and as the justification of and their validation and as the expression of the Law and all other attachments of the Old Covenant.

The “Sabbath” is anything that gives you “rest” in place of Jesus –Any “litmus test” other than Jesus – The Apostles were sent for to tell others about Jesus- where the true rest is found- nothing else- but Christ It is the changing of a Covenant-they drew their identities from it they trusted in it and they "rested in it".

Blameless

Jesus immediately recognized the true issue that the Pharisees have with his Disciples, and directs the Pharisees to the word of God in response to the Pharisees accusation.

"Jesus answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are blameless? I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice, ‘you would not have condemned the blameless. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” Matt: 12:3-8

David and his men had come to the town of Nob, where the Tabernacle was erected and asked for bread from the Ahimelek the Priest for he and his men. There was no bread on hand except the Shewbread which was in the Sanctuary of the Tabernacle.

The Shewbread which David and his men took from the Sanctuary of Tabernacle and then ate was concentrated for only for the Priest only to eat, yet Jesus declared David and his men "blameless".

Jesus then addresses the arduous work of Temple Priest in the continuous offering of sacrifices. The animals had to be bound, slaughtered, dressed and even lifted to the Alter of God. All of this entailed "work" on the Sabbath Day, yet Jesus declared that the Priest were doing their " Sabbath duty in the temple and desecrate the Sabbath and yet are blameless?"  before the Lord.

A New Priesthood for a New Covenant

Why did Jesus bring up the example of David doing what was "unlawful" and the Temple Priest "desecrating" the Sabbath, and then Jesus declared both as being "blameless" ? What was Jesus telling the Pharisees in response to their charges that Jesus' Disciples were "doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath "

Jesus then faults the understanding of the Pharisees, that they have misunderstood the true intent of the word of Scriptures.

"If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” Matt: 12:7-8

Jesus not only address the Pharisees' lack of understanding of the Scriptures, but Jesus then pronounces that his Disciples are "blameless" as well.

Jesus tells the angry Pharisees that if they, truly understood the word of God they "would not have condemned the blameless", meaning that his very Disciples are "blameless".

What is Jesus telling the Pharisees about his Disciples who were with him in the grain fields, and throughout the ages?

Jesus is stating that his Disciples are "blameless" as was David who ate the Shewbread which belong only to the Priest, and the Priest in their service at the Temple, who Jesus said was "blameless" even as they "desecrated the Sabbath”.

By Jesus declaring his Disciples "blameless" Jesus is declaring his Disciples Priest.

But Jesus' Disciples are not a Priesthood of the Covenant of Sacrifice made with Israel at Mount Sinai, of which the Sabbath was the sign of that Covenant but rather Jesus' Disciples are a Priesthood of a New Covenant of Mercy which had been, and is, God's intent all along.

"If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice," (8)

Mercy Not Sacrifice

The Old Covenant would have those who broke the Sabbath to die for "desecrating" the Sabbath as we read in the Sabbath command in Exodus:12.

But this is not what God's intent ever was. God's desire is for mercy, not sacrifice. This means that forgiveness is extended to us, we are "blameless", as was David and the   Temple Priest, there are no more sacrifices to be offered as we read in the Epistle to the Hebrew Christians.

"AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR LAWLESS DEEDS I WILL REMEMBER NO MORE." Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin." Heb: 10:17-18

Disciples Are Priest

Jesus is declaring that those called to himself, his Disciples, those who find rest only in Jesus, and are sent into the harvest are a New Priesthood of a New Covenant of Mercy which supersedes the Old Covenant of Sacrifice.

The Pharisees understood what Jesus was telling them, that the Priesthood and Covenant which they served was passing away. All that the Pharisees "rested" in was passing away and with it the very Sabbath and their position of power and prominence.

St. Paul takes up the theme of non-condemnation, that is "blameless" in his Epistle to the Roman Christians.

"there is now no more condemnation to those who are in Christ." Rm: 8:1

In the eyes of God, we, Jesus' Disciples, are "blameless", therefore we are Priest.

St. Paul uses the description of a "priestly duty" as applying to himself in his ministry of proclaiming the Gospel to the Gentiles which brings people to enter and experience that New Covenant of Mercy.

"Yet I have written you quite boldly on some points to remind you of them again, because of the grace God gave me to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit." Rm: 15:15-16

St. Peter declares all Disciples as being a Priesthood, 1Pet:2:5-9.

Jesus: Lord of the Sabbath

Jesus then angers the Pharisees even more, when he declares himself "the Lord of the Sabbath".

Jesus by using the title Lord, he is equating himself and identifying himself as the very Lord who made the Covenant with Israel. Jesus is reveling his deity to  the Pharisees, showing that he has authority to pronounce the Disciples as "blameless"

 Our Rest Only in Jesus.

If anything, else gives us "rest”, aside from Jesus, as the Sabbath did the Pharisees then we are creating a test commandment that will be uses to measure by, and if we do this, we like the Pharisees will build a hedge around that self-created Sabbath which will then impose requirement and bring unnecessary condemnation upon others and ourselves.

Only Jesus is our "rest" our "Sabbath”, that we might walk in the grain fields of this world as a Priesthood of the New Covenant of Mercy.

Benediction: May we each and all, be that "blameless" Priesthood of a Covenant of Mercy sent forth with the Gospel message in the grain fields of this world, today, tomorrow and forevermore.
