Gregory of Nyssa — The Ancient Voices
of the Church
Scripture:
Philippians 3:12–14 — “I press on to take hold of that for which Christ
Jesus took hold of me.”
Ancient Text: Gregory of Nyssa (AD 390):
“To know God is to follow Him
endlessly.”
Introduction: A Pastor Who Saw the Christian Life as a Journey Into God
Church, today we listen to Gregory of
Nyssa, one of the most spiritually perceptive voices of the early church. He
was a bishop, a theologian, a mystic, and a pastor who believed the Christian
life is not a destination — it is a journey.
Gregory lived in a time when many
Christians thought holiness was something you achieved, a level you reached, a
plateau you stood upon. Gregory said no — holiness is movement. Holiness is pursuit.
Holiness is growth. Holiness is endless.
He wrote one of the most beautiful
lines in Christian history:
“To know God is to follow Him
endlessly.”
St. Paul says the same in Philippians
3: “I press on… I strain forward… I press on toward the goal.”
Gregory teaches us that the Christian
life is not static — it is a continual ascent into the life of God.
I. Gregory Shows Us That God Is Infinite
Gregory begins with a simple truth:
God is infinite — without limit, without boundary, without end.
He wrote:
“The soul’s desire for God is never
satisfied, because God is infinite.”
He believed:
- God’s love is infinite
- God’s holiness is infinite
- God’s beauty is infinite
- God’s wisdom is infinite
- God’s goodness is infinite
If God is infinite, then knowing God
is an endless journey.
St. Paul says, “I have not yet
obtained.” Gregory says, “We never stop ascending.”
The church today needs this reminder:
We never graduate from grace. We never finish growing. We never stop pursuing
God.
II. Gregory Shows Us That the Christian Life Is Movement
Gregory believed the Christian life is
not a moment — it is movement.
He wrote:
“The soul that loves God always runs
toward Him.”
He believed spiritual growth is:
- continual
- upward
- forward
- deeper
- ongoing
He taught that every step toward God
reveals more of God, which draws us further still.
Apostle Paul says, “I press on.”
Gregory says, “I ascend.”
The church today needs this truth:
Christianity is not about standing still — it is about moving toward Christ.
III. Gregory Shows Us That Desire Is the Engine of Holiness
Gregory believed holiness is not
driven by fear — it is driven by desire.
He wrote:
“The soul’s desire for God is the
soul’s life.”
He believed:
- desire awakens the heart
- desire fuels prayer
- desire deepens worship
- desire strengthens obedience
- desire sustains perseverance
He taught that the greatest danger in
the Christian life is not failure — it is losing desire.
St. Paul says, “I strain forward.”
Gregory says, “Desire draws us upward.”
The church today needs this reminder:
Holiness is not drudgery — it is desire.
IV. Gregory Shows Us That Every Step Reveals More of God
Gregory believed that as we grow, God
reveals more of Himself — and each revelation draws us further.
He wrote:
“Every virtue is a step; every step
reveals a greater beauty.”
He believed:
- obedience reveals God’s holiness
- prayer reveals God’s presence
- worship reveals God’s glory
- Scripture reveals God’s wisdom
- service reveals God’s compassion
Each step upward reveals more of God,
which calls us to take the next step.
St. Paul says, “I press on toward
the goal.” Gregory says, “Each step reveals a greater God.”
The church today needs this truth:
Spiritual growth is not a burden — it is discovery.
V. Gregory Shows Us That the Journey Never Ends — Even in Eternity
Gregory believed that even in
eternity, we will continue to grow.
He wrote:
“The soul’s ascent into God continues
forever.”
He believed heaven is not static — it
is dynamic. Not a plateau — but an ascent. Not a finished state — but an
eternal journey into God’s infinite beauty.
St. Paul says, “I press on.”
Gregory says, “We will press on forever.”
The church today needs this reminder:
Heaven is not boredom — it is endless wonder.
Conclusion: Press On Into the Endless Beauty of God
Church, Gregory calls us to a simple,
powerful truth:
God is infinite. We are finite. But
God draws us upward. God calls us forward. God invites us deeper. God reveals
Himself step by step.
To know God is to follow Him
endlessly. To love God is to pursue Him continually. To walk with God is to
ascend forever.
Let us press on. Let us ascend. Let us
desire. Let us pursue. Let us grow.
Let us follow God endlessly — today,
tomorrow and forevermore.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, infinite in beauty and
holiness, draw us upward into Your life. Awaken our desire, strengthen our
pursuit, and deepen our love. Make our journey into You joyful, continual, and
endless — today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.
