Origen
of Alexandria — The Ancient Voices of the Church

wondrous things out of Your law.”

“The Word of God is
a light that shines in the secret places of the soul.”
Introduction:
The Scholar Who Loved the Scriptures
Today we listen to Origen — one of the earliest and most
devoted students of Scripture. Living in Alexandria in the early third century,
Origen taught believers to approach the Bible not merely with the mind, but
with the heart. He believed that Scripture is alive, filled with the presence
of Christ, and capable of transforming the soul.
Origen was a brilliant thinker, but more importantly, he
was a humble disciple. He prayed before he studied. He fasted before he taught.
He believed that the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of the believer to see Christ
in every page.
The psalmist prays, “Open my eyes.” Origen says the
Word “shines in the secret places of the soul.”
The ancient voice calls us to seek illumination from the
Word of God.
I. Origen Shows Us That Scripture Is a Living Gift
Origen teaches that Scripture is not a dead letter but a
living revelation. It speaks. It convicts. It comforts. It transforms.
He writes that Scripture:
• is breathed out by God
• carries divine power
• reveals Christ
• nourishes the soul
• leads believers into truth
Origen shows us that the Bible is not merely read — it is
encountered.
II. Origen Shows Us That Christ Is the Light of Scripture
For Origen, Christ is the key to understanding the Word.
Every story points to Him. Every symbol finds meaning in Him. Every hope is
fulfilled in Him.
He teaches that Christ:
• is the light of revelation
• is the meaning of prophecy
• is the wisdom of God
• is the center of Scripture
• is the One who opens the eyes of the heart
Origen shows us that Scripture is not understood apart from
Christ — He is its illumination.
III. Origen Shows Us That the Spirit Opens the Heart
Origen believed that true understanding of Scripture comes
through the Holy Spirit. Study is important. Discipline is valuable. But
illumination is divine.
He writes that the Spirit:
• opens the eyes of the heart
• softens the soul
• reveals Christ
• convicts of truth
• leads believers into holiness
Origen shows us that Scripture is not mastered by intellect
— it is received by grace.
IV. Origen Shows Us That Scripture Calls Us to Holiness
Origen teaches that the purpose of Scripture is
transformation. The Word does not merely inform — it reforms. It does not
merely teach — it sanctifies.
He writes that Scripture:
• purifies the heart
• strengthens the will
• renews the mind
• shapes the character
• leads believers into Christlikeness
V. Origen Shows Us That Scripture Leads Us Into Worship
For Origen, Scripture always leads to worship. When the
heart is illuminated, it bows. When the mind is opened, it adores. When Christ
is revealed, praise rises.
He teaches that Scripture:
• awakens awe
• inspires prayer
• deepens devotion
• strengthens faith
• draws believers into communion with God
Origen shows us that the Word of God is not merely
understood — it is adored.
Conclusion:
Seek the Light of the Word
Church, Origen calls us to approach Scripture with
reverence and expectation:
The Word is living. The Word is illuminating. The Word is
Spirit‑filled. The Word is sanctifying. The Word is worship‑inspiring.
Let us open the Scriptures with prayer. Let us seek Christ
in every page. Let us welcome the Spirit’s illumination. Let us allow the Word
to shape our lives. Let us worship the God who speaks.
The Word shines — even in the secret places of the soul.

Lord Jesus Christ, eternal Word of God, Shine Your light
upon our hearts. Open our eyes to behold Your truth. Fill us with Your Spirit’s
illumination. Make Your Word our delight, our strength, and our guide. Let Your
truth transform us, Let Your presence sustain us, And let Your glory shine in
Your Church today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.
