Based on the Book of Common Prayer
Scripture:
“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to
Jesus…” — Hebrews 12:1–2
Reflection
This prayer begins with a confession that cuts through all illusions of
self‑sufficiency: “It is only by Your gift that Your faithful people offer
You true and laudable service.”
We do not serve God because we are strong. We serve Him because He is
gracious. Every act of obedience, every moment of faithfulness, every step
forward in holiness — all of it is a gift of His Spirit at work within us.
The prayer then asks God to grant that we may run without stumbling.
The Christian life is not a stroll; it is a race. Not a sprint of adrenaline,
but a long obedience in the same direction. And along the way, there are
obstacles:
- weariness
- temptation
- discouragement
- distraction
- the weight of our own limitations
We stumble when we try to run in our own strength. We endure when we run
with our eyes fixed on Jesus.
The prayer points us toward the finish line: God’s heavenly promises.
We do not run aimlessly. We run toward the One who has already run the race
before us — the One who endured the cross, rose in victory, and now reigns with
the Father and the Holy Spirit.
To run without stumbling is not to run perfectly. It is to run held by
grace. It is to rise again when we fall. It is to trust that Christ Himself is
both our strength and our destination.
Prayer
Almighty and merciful God, You alone give strength to Your people. Keep
our feet from stumbling, steady our hearts in the race set before us, and lead
us toward Your heavenly promises. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
