Melito of Sardis — “The Ancient Voices
of the Church”
Scripture:
1 Corinthians 5:7 — “For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed.”
Ancient Text: Melito of Sardis (AD 170), On Pascha:
“He is the One who made the heavens
and was born on earth.”
Introduction: A Pastor Who Preached the Cross with Fire
Church, today we listen to Melito
of Sardis, one of the earliest Christian preachers whose words still burn
with power. He lived in the second century, and his sermon On Pascha is
one of the most beautiful proclamations of Christ ever written.
Melito preached Christ as:
- the Passover Lamb
- the Deliverer
- the Liberator
- the Redeemer
- the God who became man
He wrote with poetic fire:
“He is the One who made the heavens
and was born on earth.”
St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 5: “Christ,
our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed.”
Melito teaches us that the cross is
not only an event — it is the fulfillment of God’s saving plan.
I. Melito Shows Us That Christ Is the True Passover Lamb
Melito believed the Passover in Exodus
was a shadow — Christ is the reality.
He wrote:
“The Lamb was slain, and Israel was
saved. Christ was slain, and the world was saved.”
He believed Christ is:
- the Lamb without blemish
- the Lamb who takes away sin
- the Lamb who breaks the chains of death
- the Lamb who liberates God’s people
- the Lamb who leads us into freedom
1 Corinthians 5 says Christ is our
Passover. Melito says Christ is the Lamb who fulfills the ancient story.
The church today needs this reminder:
The cross is not an accident — it is the Passover fulfilled.
II. Melito Shows Us That Christ’s Death Is Deliverance
Melito preached the cross as
liberation.
He wrote:
“He led us from slavery to freedom,
from darkness to light, from death to life.”
He believed Christ’s death:
- breaks the chains of sin
- destroys the power of death
- liberates the captive
- heals the wounded
- restores the broken
He taught that the cross is not defeat
— it is victory.

IV. Melito Shows Us That Christ’s Resurrection Is Triumph

humanity with Him.”
He believed the resurrection:
- conquers death
- vindicates Christ
- restores humanity
- inaugurates new creation
- guarantees our hope
He taught that Christ’s rising is the
beginning of our rising.

resurrection is not symbolic — it is triumph.
V. Melito Shows Us That Christ’s Passover Creates a New People
Melito believed the Passover creates a
community — the people of God.

“He made us His own people, a new
Israel.”
He believed Christ’s Passover forms:
- a redeemed people
- a worshiping people
- a holy people
- a liberated people
- a grateful people
He taught that salvation is not only
personal — it is communal.

We are saved into a community, not into isolation.

Deliverer. Christ is God made flesh. Christ is the Victor over death. Christ is
the Passover fulfilled. Christ is our freedom.
Let us celebrate the Passover of
Christ. Let us walk in the freedom He gives. Let us live as His redeemed
people. Let us proclaim His victory.

is the One who was born on earth. He is the One who died for us. He is the One
who rose for us — today, tomorrow and forevermore.

Lord Jesus, our Passover Lamb, thank
You for Your sacrifice and Your victory. Deliver us from sin, break the chains
of death, and lead us into the freedom of Your kingdom. Make us a people who
live in Your triumph — today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.
