Athenagoras of Athens – Ancient Voices of the Church
Scripture:
“Since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made.” — Romans 1:20
Ancient Quote (Athenagoras):
“We know God by His works, and we worship Him because we have learned His character.” (Embassy for the Christians)
A Philosopher Who Defended the Faith
Church, today we listen to Athenagoras of Athens, a second‑century Christian philosopher and apologist. He wrote to the Roman emperor, defending Christians against false accusations and explaining the beauty, truth, and rationality of the Christian faith.
Athenagoras became:
• defender of Christian monotheism • exposer of pagan idolatry • articulator of the Trinity • advocate for Christian moral purity • witness to the transforming power of grace
He believed Christianity was not irrational superstition — it was the most reasonable, moral, and beautiful way of life in the world. He believed God was not found in idols — but in His works, His Word, and His people. He believed Christ was not a mere teacher — but the eternal Logos through whom all things were made.
Athenagoras shows us what that truth looks like.
I. Athenagoras Shows Us That God Is Known Through His Works
Athenagoras wrote:
“God is known by His works.”
He believed creation itself is a testimony — a living witness — to the reality of the one true God. Christians do not worship stone, wood, or imagination. We worship the Creator whose fingerprints are everywhere.
Scripture:
“The heavens declare the glory of God.” — Psalm 19:1
Athenagoras teaches us that God’s works reveal:
• His power • His wisdom • His goodness • His order • His majesty
The church today needs this reminder: God is not distant. He is not hidden. He is not silent. His works proclaim Him.
Ancient Quote (Athenagoras):
“The Creator is known by the harmony of His creation.” (Embassy for the Christians)
II. Athenagoras Shows Us That Christian Worship Is Rational and Beautiful
Athenagoras defended Christians against the charge of “atheism.” He insisted that Christian worship is not irrational — it is the highest expression of truth.
He wrote:
“We worship God not with lifeless images, but with understanding.”
Scripture:
“Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” — Psalm 96:9
Athenagoras believed worship:
• is grounded in truth • is shaped by Scripture • is offered with understanding • is expressed in holiness • is directed to the living God
The church today needs worship that is both beautiful and true, both holy and intelligent, both heartfelt and grounded.
Ancient Quote (Athenagoras):
“To know God is to worship Him rightly.” (Embassy for the Christians)
III. Athenagoras Shows Us That Christ Is the Eternal Word
Athenagoras gave one of the earliest clear explanations of the Trinity in Christian history. He taught that the Son is the Logos, eternally with the Father, through whom all things were made.
He wrote:
“The Son is the Word of the Father, His eternal power and wisdom.”
Scripture: “In the beginning was the Word… and the Word was God.” — John 1:1
He believed Christ is:
• eternal with the Father • the agent of creation • the revelation of God • the Savior of the world • the foundation of Christian worship
The church today needs this truth: Christ is not merely a teacher — He is the eternal Word made flesh.
Ancient Quote (Athenagoras):
“The Word is in God, and God is in the Word.” (Embassy for the Christians)
IV. Athenagoras Shows Us That Holiness Is the Church’s Witness
Athenagoras argued that Christian morality was itself proof of the gospel. Christians lived differently — and that difference revealed the God they served.
He wrote:
“Our lives are the evidence of our faith.”
Scripture:
“Be holy, for I am holy.” — 1 Peter 1:16
He believed holiness is:
• purity of heart • integrity of life • compassion toward others • rejection of idolatry • devotion to Christ
The church today needs this reminder: Holiness is not optional — it is evangelism.
Ancient Quote (Athenagoras): “The purity of Christians is the testimony of their God.” (Embassy for the Christians)
V. Athenagoras Shows Us That God’s Character Shapes God’s People
Athenagoras believed Christians become like the God they worship. Idols deform the soul. The living God transforms it.
He wrote:
“We become like what we worship.”
Scripture:
“We all… are being transformed into His image.” — 2 Corinthians 3:18
He believed:
• God’s holiness shapes our holiness • God’s wisdom shapes our understanding • God’s goodness shapes our compassion • God’s truth shapes our worship • God’s beauty shapes our souls
The church today needs this reminder: Worship is not performance — it is transformation.
Ancient Quote (Athenagoras):
“The soul that knows God is shaped by His goodness.” (Embassy for the Christians)
Conclusion: Worship the God Who Is Known by His Works
Church, Athenagoras calls us to a simple, powerful truth:
God is known by His works. Worship is grounded in truth. Christ is the eternal Word. Holiness is our witness. God’s character shapes His people.
Let us worship the Lord with understanding. Let us behold His glory in creation. Let us confess Christ as the eternal Word. Let us live holy lives that reveal His goodness.
Where God is known, worship is beautiful. Where Christ is confessed, truth is clear. Where holiness is lived, the gospel shines.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, eternal Word of the Father, reveal Your glory in Your works. Shape our minds with truth, our hearts with holiness, and our lives with compassion. Make us a people who worship with understanding and live with purity. Transform us into Your likeness — today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.
