God’s Providence

Based on the Book of Common Prayer

Scripture

“He is able to do above what we believe”

The providence of God is not passive oversight—it is His active, wise ordering of all things in heaven and on earth. This prayer reminds us that nothing in creation drifts outside His care, and nothing in our lives escapes His attention. The God who governs galaxies is the same God who watches over the details of our days.

We often pray for what we want, but this prayer teaches us to ask for what we need. It acknowledges that some things we desire may be hurtful, and some things we resist may be profitable. Only God sees the whole picture; only God knows what will shape us into Christlikeness.

So we ask Him to:

  • Put away hurtful things — anything that would wound our souls, distort our desires, or hinder our obedience
  • Give what is profitable — the gifts, challenges, opportunities, and graces that will deepen our faith and strengthen our witness

This is the heart of trust: believing that God’s providence is wiser than our preferences. His ordering of our lives is not random but redemptive. He gives what builds us, removes what harms us, and guides us toward what glorifies Him.

To pray this prayer is to rest in the truth that God’s hands are steady, His wisdom is perfect, and His care never fails.

Prayer

O God of unfailing providence, order my life according to Your wisdom. Remove what harms, supply what helps, and shape my heart to trust Your care. Give me grace to receive every good thing You appoint for my growth in Christ. Amen.
