Augustine prayed, “O Lord God, give peace unto us…
the peace of the Sabbath, which has no evening.”
In just a few lines, he names the deepest desire of every human heart: rest that cannot be taken away.
We taste moments of rest in this life — a quiet morning, a settled heart, a word of grace — but they fade. Evening comes. Responsibilities return. Our minds stir again. Augustine reminds us that the rest we long for is not found in circumstances but in a Person.
Christ Himself Is Our Sabbath
Augustine’s prayer echoes Hebrews 4, where Scripture tells us that the true Sabbath is not a day but Christ Himself. In Him, God’s work is complete. In Him, our striving ends. In Him, we are welcomed into a rest that does not depend on our performance, our perfection, or our ability to hold everything together.
God Works in Us — and One Day Will Rest in Us
Augustine says something astonishing: “You shall rest in us, as now You work in us.” Right now, God is at work — shaping, healing, sanctifying, renewing. But the day is coming when His work in us will be so complete that He will rest in us, rejoicing over the finished beauty of His grace.
What God begins in you, He will finish. What He is shaping in you now, He will one day delight in forever.
Eternal Rest Begins Now
Augustine’s “Sabbath with no evening” is the eternal life Jesus promised — not merely life after death, but life in Him today. Every moment of trust, every breath of prayer, every turning of the heart toward Christ is a small entrance into that eternal Sabbath.
You don’t have to wait for heaven to begin resting in Christ. You can rest in Him now.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are our Sabbath and our peace. Quiet our anxious hearts. Let Your finished work silence our striving. Work in us today, and prepare us for the day when You will rest in us forever. Teach us to live from Your rest, not toward it. Amen.
