Based on the Revised Common Lectionary
Scripture
“Christ also suffered for you, leaving
you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.” -1 Peter 2:21
This prayer holds together two
inseparable truths of the gospel: Christ is both our sacrifice and our
example.
First, we remember that Jesus is the
sacrifice for sin—the One who bore our guilt, carried our shame, and reconciled
us to the Father. Our life with God begins not with our effort but with His
mercy. We receive the fruits of His redeeming work with gratitude, not
achievement.
But the prayer does not stop there. It
moves from redemption to imitation: “Give us grace… to follow daily
in the blessed steps of his most holy life.”
Christ’s life is not only the means of
our salvation; it is the pattern of our transformation. His humility, His
compassion, His obedience, His purity, His love—these are the “blessed steps”
we are invited to walk in.
And notice the prayer’s realism: we
need grace to follow Him.
We cannot imitate Christ by willpower.
We cannot produce godliness by effort. We cannot walk in His steps without His
Spirit.
The same grace that saves us also
shapes us. The same Christ who died for us now lives in us. The same Spirit who
raised Jesus empowers our daily obedience.
To pray this prayer is to say: “Lord,
let my gratitude become imitation. Let Your redemption bear fruit in my life.
Let me walk where You walk.”
A godly life is not a burden—it is the
overflow of being loved, redeemed, and indwelt by Christ Himself.
Prayer
Almighty God, thank You for the
redeeming work of Your Son. Give us grace to receive His salvation with
thankful hearts and to follow in the steps of His holy life. Shape us by His
love, strengthen us by His Spirit, and make our lives reflect His glory. Through
Jesus Christ our Lord, today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.
