Our God, Our Courage
Ignatius, bishop of Antioch and
disciple of the apostle John, wrote seven letters on his way to martyrdom. Over
and over he calls Jesus “our God.” For Ignatius, this was not a slogan—it was
the anchor of his courage.
He believed the One who conquered
death now walked with him into death. He believed the One who rose in glory
would raise him as well. He believed nothing—not Rome, not suffering, not the
sword—could separate him from the love of Christ.
Ignatius teaches us that courage is
not the absence of fear but the presence of Christ. When Jesus is our center,
fear loses its grip. When Jesus is our hope, we can endure anything.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, our God and Savior, fill
us with the courage that comes from knowing You. Strengthen our hearts to
follow You faithfully, today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.
