The Interrogatory Creed of Hippolytus Apostolic Tradition, AD 215
Faith
That Speaks Its Name
In the baptismal liturgy recorded by
Hippolytus, new believers were asked three questions:
“Do you believe in God the Father?” “Do you believe in Christ Jesus the Son?” “Do
you believe in the Holy Spirit?”
With each answer — “I believe”
— the believer stepped deeper into the life of God.
This creed reminds us that faith is
not silent. It speaks. It confesses. It answers God’s call with trust.
Every day, the Spirit invites us to
renew this confession — not only with our lips, but with our lives.
Prayer
Holy God, strengthen our confession.
Let our “I believe” rise from a heart anchored in Your grace today, tomorrow and forevermore. Amen.
